Photography in Nanosciences

2nd Scientific Image Contest in Nanoscience

Entry instructions

Keep in mind!!!

Since this is a nanoscience image competition, it is expected that images contain nano-objects. A nano-object is an object with dimensions not exceedeing 1000 nm (1 micron). To properly assess the object size, all images  must display a scale with properly identified units. Images with no units or scale will be disqualified. Images with objects larger than 1000 nm can be submitted, however, judges will decide whether the image is eligible or not.

IMPORTANT: This contest is open to students, researchers, and/or professors.

Categories

Images can be submitted to either of the next three categories:

  • Electron-based microscopy (SEM, STEM, TEM, STM, FESEM)

  • Atomic-based microscopy (AFM, MFM, EFM, etc.)

  • Other nanoimaging techniques (LEED, RHEED, EELS, etc.)

Image size

A template is provided below for downloading. Please attached the image and submit both the template and image separately. Use the best resolution. Image size should not exceed 5 MB.

Rules

Each file must contain only one image, Files with several images are not eligible. A short description must be provided with the image, emphasizing its contents and/or physical/chemical significance.

Editing

Both electron-based-microscopy or other-nanoimaging-techniques images can be edited only for color. No other editing is allowed.

Atomic-based-microscopy images can only be edited for color only when original images are in black and white. If an image in this category is found to be edited for any other feature than color, it will be disqualified.

Contestants will be notified in due time as to whether the image has been accepted for the competition.

Evaluation criteria

A panel of judges will evaluate the images in each category. The aspects under considerations are:

Image Aesthetics: Proper distribution of image components. Excellent resolution, combination of colors, projection. Image is not blurred or fuzzy.

Image Contents: The object in the image is well focused, centered, first plane, second plane. The object is observed partially, the image projects something relevant on the research.

Oral presentation: If necessary, judges will call participants for an explanation of the image.

Prizes

For each category a prize along with a certificate will be awarded.

The prize will be announced soon.

Winners will be announced the forth day of the event.
